HOW TO IDENTIFY PCOD/PCOS?

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a major cause of infertility among women throughout the world. In India 10 to 13% women in reproductive age suffering from PCOD.PCOD is an endocrine abnormality that presents as hyperandrogenemia, anovulation, and/or polycystic ovaries. The exact causes of PCOS are not entirely understood, though unhealthy lifestyle and dietary habits are found as the leading causative factors for the PCOD.

Early symptoms

•Missed periods, irregular periods, or very light periods: Involves missing periods or not having a period at all. It may also involve heavy bleeding during periods.

•Weight gain, especially around the belly: Due to hormonal changes 40-50% of PCOS cases are associated with obesity.

•Acne or oily skin: PCOS also causes acne over face, back and chest

•Thinning of hair: People with PCOS may have loss of hair on their head or start to bald.

What causes PCOS/PCOD?

Androgen Level: High androgen levels prevent ovaries from releasing eggs, which causes irregular menstrual cycles. Irregular ovulation can also cause small fluid fill sac formation in the ovaries, high androgen also results in facial hair growth and acne.

Insulin resistance: An increase in insulin levels causes ovaries to release male hormones androgens, increase male hormone suppress ovulation and contribute other symptoms of PCOD

PCOS/PCOD Diagnosis

PCOD or PCOS can be diagnosed through clinical examinations, and ultrasound imaging, depending on symptoms such as irregular periods, unwanted male-pattern hair ,and weight gain.
